Geno Joins the Circus

-->
Earlier tonight, someone finally picked Geno Smith, and it was the New York Joke, I mean Jets. Last year, I said the Jets could not deviate any further from what an intelligent organization would do- I was wrong.

With the 39th pick of the draft, Smith finally received the news he has anxiously waited for over the past two days. The only problem is, that he is putting himself in one of the worst possible situations by joining the Jets. Between a coach who cannot keep his promises, a porous offensive line, a team unloading its roster, and playing in the world capital of myopic fans and media, Smith has entered the belly of the beast. The biggest thing is that Smith is not Robert Griffin III or Russell Wilson. There was a reason why Smith was passed on 38 times before receiving the call, and this may be just another one of Woody Johnson’s schemes to stimulate attendance like the failed Tim Tebow experiment, remember that guy?

As of now, the Jets do not know what they are doing. They are lost. Shutdown corner Darrelle Revis missed the better part of last year with an injury and has now been traded to Tampa. Now, former Alabama cornerback Dee Milliner, whom they drafted with the pick acquired in the trade, will replace Revis.

Though Jon Idzik is considered as a drafting guru, as of now, his logic is still a bit cloudy in selecting Mizzou defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson. Richardson may be a good player and every team can always improve its pass rush, however I am not too sure this was their biggest need. This team lacks a reliable offensive line and assets for its quarterbacks, especially in a draft with so much depth in lineman and a couple standout receivers and tight ends available like Notre Dame’s Tyler Eifert.

And then there is the quarterback position. For once, Mark Sanchez will not be guaranteed the starting job heading into training camp. This may save his career as he may finally have a reason to improve, in practice and in games, knowing he is expendable. A better, faster, younger, more versatile, and more liked guy is right behind him in Geno. Smith will not carry the Jets like RG3 and Wilson did last year, both leading their teams to the playoffs. Last year was an anomaly. I am honestly not too surprised to see the Jets thinking a mobile quarterback will make them a winner. This is also a bad time to catch onto the fad, as defenses will figure out ways to control option quarterbacks.

If Smith can perform like he did in the first half of last season, the Jets may actually not be a punchline this year. But if Smith repeats his train wreck end to his college career, this will just add to the long, long list of mediocrity in East Rutherford, for the Jets that is.

By the way, the Jets just drafted someone to protect Smith in Kent State guard Brian Winters with the 72nd overall pick.
